Kids versions of YouTube, Messenger, and Spotify apps: Are they worth it?

Parents today are on a mission to find apps that are not only fun but also safe for their kids. As a parent I recognize that our children are interested in what we are interested. From their perspective, they see adults engaged with their screens (TV, phone, computer, and tablets) and they too want to see what we see. Do I want my children seeing content that is not suitbale for them at their age? Of course not. But, if children can safely do what I’m doing with limitations that I can control as a parent, then I’m on board to considering it. On that note I wondered what these kids versions of popular apps had to offer. Here’s my review on YouTube Kids, Messenger Kids, and Spotify Kids, where I look into their features, potential concerns, and give my opinion if they are worth integrating into your child’s digital world.

YouTube Kids: Customizable and Fun

YouTube Kids stands out with its commitment to creating a kid-friendly environment where young explorers can discover a world of content. The platform’s intuitive design makes it easy for children to navigate, and the robust parental control features are a major plus. I particularly appreciate the ‘Parent Approved’ and ‘Collections’ features, allowing me to curate the content my child is exposed to. The ability to adjust the content level by age ensures that the videos are always age-appropriate. The timer and blocking features are excellent for maintaining a healthy balance of screen time and content consumption. Moreover, the absence of ads enhances the viewing experience, keeping it safe and uninterrupted.

Messenger Kids: Safe and Interactive Communication

Messenger Kids provides a secure platform for children to connect with family and friends through video, voice, and messaging. The app’s standout feature is the extensive parental control, managed through the Parent Dashboard. This ensures that children are only communicating with approved contacts. The fun filters and single-player games are a hit with kids, adding an element of playfulness to the communication experience. There are no ads or ways to spend money, and it doesn’t collect information to show ads. Parents can see who their kids are chatting with, making it a safe way to start using social media.

Spotify Kids: A Musical Adventure with Limitations

Spotify Kids opens up a world of musical exploration for children. The app is exclusively available with a Spotify Premium Family subscription, which is a limitation for those without the subscription. However, the content within is well-curated, featuring music, audiobooks, and more to accompany every part of a child’s day. While Spotify Kids is a robust option for child-friendly audio content, understanding the selection process for its content can provide additional peace of mind.

The kid-friendly interface is easy to use and visually appealing to young users. A drawback is the inability to add content from the main Spotify database, limiting choices to the pre-selected, kid-approved options. While this ensures safety, it restricts a broader musical exploration. Unlike its adult counterpart, Spotify Kids does not collect or use personal data for advertising, highlighting a strong stance on protecting children’s privacy.

Conclusion

As adults, it’s our responsibility to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape and understand the risks involved that can potentially harm our children. By leveraging the parental controls and privacy settings offered by apps like YouTube Kids, Messenger Kids, and Spotify Kids, you can create a more secure online environment. As a parent, I do find these apps are better for children than the adult versions from a standpoint of limiting their exposure to content that can cause harm to their physical and wellbeing. However, they fall short as technology is only part of the solution. Engaging in ongoing conversations about digital etiquette, privacy, and the importance of a balanced online life is equally crucial. Through a combination of these strategies, we not only enhance the digital safety net but also empower our children to explore, learn, and connect safely in the digital age. Are you using these apps? How is it working for your family? Let me know in the comments.
